Multiple Imagery Straight Images

Mapplethorpe Location Straight Images

Mapplethorpe Portrait Image Bank

In this self portrait, Mapplethorpe is formally dressed, he's striking a powerful pose perhaps to represent sexuality at the time where men were seen as more powerful and strong as a gender. This image shows a man at his best, in a tuxedo and dressed up.

Another self portrait by Mapplethorpe, this image shows power in a different, from using depth and form he creates this power of a silent leader of sorts. I get the senses of danger from the characters cane, maybe it represents the violence in his life.

This image shows emotions of sadness and pain, we don't know hat could have happened to this character. This picture puts in you thought as you try to work out what has happened and why this person seems sad, this is brought out through the use of form.

This image in my opinion symbols women at the time, they didn't have much free speech in the 70s, it was getting better at the time but still many women were stereotyped to be house wives. Mapplethorpe portrays this through the tape mourn the mouth.

This is the opposite of the image above, this one shows women acting against the stereotype, she has short hair like a boy, its messy, her clothes are considered very male and the the cigarette implies the deviation from social norms.

This image represents the Bettles, it shows the writing stage, deep thought and beginning something new and unique.

Connecting Essay 2

This is a great example of how light is used to aid the formal element of movement in a photo. The photo is captured using the moving light to create shapes and outlines of way the light is travelling in. The light movement can be  chaotic and clean only depending on the when the photo was taken. In this image the main colour is black, this allows for the lights to have a better effect and flow the way that they do rather then having a distorted mess.

This photo of mine also shows how movement and light is shown, there are squiggles of light in the photo especially to the left and the centre. The entire photo itself is rather chaotic, you can't really tell what is going on, its too distorted and it seems as if a lot is going on. I like the way in this image how the colours layer over each other, for example at the top of the image the main colour is white and as we continue down the photo we get red and green with the occasional black.

This photos relate as the way in which they are so similar, they both use light to make the formal element of movement come to life, although they look different, the movement shows that they have similar colours and effect. The first is mostly made up of black, whereas my photo uses more colour the light blue is what the two images have in common also sharing a little bit of red apart from this both photos are very different, the first image is most likely made with a glowstick or something similar. The two images are almost the reverse of the other one as, in my photo bright colours is what makes up most of the image with little whereas the sourced image requires black for the bright colours to stand out.

Connecting Essay 1

The photo above uses the formal element of patterns, in the photo the white lines follow each other as part of the pattern, but as the manhole cover is twisted it brings parts of the lines out of place, making the pattern imperfect. Along with this the manhole cover distorting the white lines, it has its own pattern of the gaps all following each other and point in the same direction which now happens to be pointing in the same direction the white lines are travelling towards.

This I photo, in the photo the formal element of patterns can be shown in a few ways. First off the manhole cover here has a pattern both vertically and horizontally, using the squares across the face of the cover. Secondly the brick work following the edge of the cover and finally the brickwork on the left head vertically up the photo.

together these photos both show distinctions in patterns and an example of multiple patterns side by side positioned on the floor and on manhole covers. Both images show the same context but are also very different as you can the settings are different and the manhole covers which share similarities in the patterns on the face of the cover are two very different types of covers.
