I believe that i had a much better session than last time, I managed to get a longer time taking photos and i came up with much more imaginative ideas and all round better photos. i found it a lot easier this this as I was able to tie more photos and take the skills from the 2 location and previous studio shots, although i occasionally struggled with ideas overall it was a much better session.

This photo uses contrast between the items of clothing, the fluffy jumper and the thin cardigan, there is clear contrast in the colour as well as the fabrics. I do really like the way  neither person takes up more room then the other in this photo both are either side of each other. 

There is a lot of contrast in this photo, from height, size, clothing and colour. I do really like this photo but I do think there are some improvements that could be done for example the model on the far right is a little to far away from the model in the middle and the model on the far left is a little to close, I feel that I need to pay a little more attention when taking photos to fix problems like this straight away. 

To improve, I'd properly change the lighting each picture feels really dark and difficult to see what's going on.

I didn't have a whole lot of time during this session as we were the last group in, I token a reasonable amount of photos but nothing I was massively proud of, but none the less I still had some good photos. I found this session to be rather easy as I had already tried contrast location and I incorporated what I'd learnt for from that and brought in into the studio.

In this photo the contrast between the two models is quite clear, one has a bowl around her head the other does not, I thought this photo was fun to look at, it looks good and makes you laugh a little, although for this photo I would have to crop of the right hand side as the background has come in a little.

This photo has a lot of contrast involved for example an obvious one it the different kind of shoe but also leg size, jeans, shoe size and colour, this image is good but for me the shoes could be more centred but also more in line with each other as one is higher than the other. 

To improve, I'd like a longer period and i believe that i could come up with some more creative ideas and much better photos.

Contrast Location Work Diary 2

In this session I had the opportunity to take photos of people surrounding the idea of contrast, I found this easy as you use pretty much anything for example contrast in gender and height. This was easy for me as I had already practiced these skills trying to do studio work.

This photo uses contrast really well, the colour difference in the jumper and jacket flows really nicely, not only is there contrast in colour but also in the fabric as you can clearly see the difference in the soft jumper and rough jacket. . 

This photo shows contrast in something other than colour, in this photo the contrast is between the sky and buildings, the sky is cloudy but also flat almost whereas the building is more alive and the different look of the building next to the sky is really nice. 

To improve I believe that i could find better contrast between people, gender and height are very clear things perhaps it would be fun to take photos of minuscule contrast.

Contrast Location Work Diary

In this session we went out and focused on contrast much like in our studio work but this time within the real world and this meant being able to focus on nature and natural contrast. Flowers and walls had quiet a major part in session and that is what the majority of my photos resembled. I found this to be rather easy as i found good contrast in a natural environment although i did forget to take photos of contrast in people.

This is very good photo from the session, I like this photo because the contrast is strong yet there isn't a lot of the yellow, the compassion of the photo is what causes the contrast to have a better effect, I feel that if the yellow was in a corner the photo wouldn't be as good as it is. 

This for me is a really good photo, the contrast from the brick withe wall and the floor goes very well although there are things that I would improve, for example if I was to move the brick away from the door as there is no reason for it to be there, also I feel as if I need to take it from a better angle it looks a little sideways. 

Work Diary Multiple Imagery

This session we were given the tasks of 'looking up' and 'looking down' but swell as doing this we had to create multiple imagery. This consisted of taking 9 or so photos and then editing it later so that those 9 photos created 1 photo. I found this easy as there was nothing too complicated about it and we could literally photograph anything. 

This is my favourite one, I like the colour of the leaves, it gives a very nice fresh and autumn like effect. The lighting also works really well as in the bottom left corner it's bright and as you move closer to the top right corner it gets darker. 

This is another of my favourites from the session, the greens and browns really compliment each otter, showing contrast and autumn colours. What I like about this photo is that in each individual photo there is some green and some brown, I believe that it uses contrast between these colours really well. 

To improve for next time i would like to create some more multiple imagery of 'looking up' at the time it was easier to do it 'looking down'.

Work Diary Mapplethorpe Studio

In this session, we went into the studio to continue work on Mapplethorpe, learning from last time that my compassion was off slightly, I decided that this time I was going to be careful and think about what I was doing. This time round, I didn't have to retake anything and I believe that i had captured Mapplethorpe in the best way that I could. 

Here you can see there is less background and the camera is focused on the model, there is no unnecessary background colours or objects it's just a portrait and that is clear to see. This is a good example of a portrait that represents Mapplethorpe, the way he takes portraits of just people being people, the compassion of the photo and the overall feel, to improve though I would use tone to give it a bigger Mapplethorpe feel.  

This photo is again very Mapplethorpe, in fact I copied a Mapplethorpe picture here and did my best to create the feeling the Mapplethorpe does in his portraits, I do like this image but I'm not sure it quite has the same effect at Mapplethorpe does in his photos. 

To improve me next time, i would like more time to do this kind of work, I do really enjoy it and find it interesting, it would also help perfect my compassion as I'm still aware that not all my photos are perfect. 

Work Diary Mapplethorpe Location

In this session, we went out on location to replicate Robert Mapplethorpe's work, I found this slightly difficult as I had to work on my compassion of portraits, I had to go out a second time to ensure I had a suffocate amount of decent photos, the second time i went out i found it easier and accomplished a lot more as I was now aware of what i needed to focus on. 

This a photo taken from the fist part of the session as you can see there are a lot of unnecessary things in the photo for example the white strip above the model's head and the brownish box near the upper left corner. 

This was taken front the second part of the session, it looks a lot better not that i removed everything unnecessary from the photo, it looks cleaner and smoother and shows Mapplethorpe in portraits. 

To improve, I'd like to to work on my compassion and get it right the first time without wasting time. 

Walk Work Diary 2

On our second walk we took a very similar route as the first time, we were looking for the same topics, sense of journey, back of heads and autumn colours. Obviously it was a lot easier this time around as we had already experienced the subjects and knew where we could improve.

This is my favourite photos from the session, I like the way the branches arch over and form a cave like exit, this captures a sense of journey but along with that the autumn colours are expressed through the plants and leaves as well as the squirrel. This is a very good example of contrast the the centre of the picture is dark and greyish and as we go out from the centre we get brown and free and right in the centre we get the bright entrance. 

This back of head portrait captures a sense of journey, using the paths to the left and right of the model as well as the sign in the distance. This uses the back of head portrait and from this is able to create contrast either side of the model, on the left greenery and on the right a path leading into the dark. 

I'd improve the say way as last time, I would like more diverse surroundings to come up with more imaginative photos.

Walk Work Diary 1

In this session we went on an hour and a half walk, during this we looked for three things in particular these being autumn colours, back of heads and a sense of journey. This was a rather difficult task for the sense of journey part as it wasn't something physical we could look for for, although we found a sense of journey within road signs and path ways. The other two were easier as we have already taken back of head portraits and autumn colours are everywhere in autumn.

This is a favourite of mine from the session, I like the way the green and the blue sit beside the brown leaves, this photo gives a sense of journey as the path way leads towards somewhere. I am really happy with how this photo came out there isn't unnecessary distractions, the photo is clean and produces a great image. The formal elements used in this photo are lines and contrast, they work very well together as I was able to sperate each colour and they sit nicely next to each other.

This is another favourite of mine, this photo shows autumn colours, you can see the green leaves and trees in the distant with the brown leaves on the floor and the contributing bark towards the front. I really like the way the trees in the foreground are brown and lightly coloured but the trees in the background are green and dark. 

To improve I'd like to go somewhere different, Harlow isn't the most interesting place and most of it looks the same, I'd like to visit somewhere a bit more diverse in scenery and colour. 

Back of Head Studio Work Diary

In this session, we went into the studio to take photos of once again the back of each others head but this time in a more manipulative environment, we were able to control the lighting giving us full control over what the photos will look like. I really enjoyed this session as it was quick and I believe I took some really good photos.

This is my favourite from the session, I just really like the way it looks, she's acting pretty casual as if she doesn't know the photo is being taken. The hand on her hair looks natural and normal, I just feel that this photo is natural and that makes the photo even better, here I believe I've captured a normal action in a manipulated area. 

This is one of the best photos of the session and I believe it to be one of my favourites as well, I like this one because it's taken at a different angle to the others, the model is more to the left and not as centred as the other, I think it really works in this photo, there is also nothing to distract the viewer which allows this photo to still be good. 

To improve on this topic I would have had variety of different people with different hair styles, whether that's dyed or half shaven. 

Back of Head Portrait Work Diary

During this session we went out to take photos of the back of each others heads, this was fun as we were able to have a laugh about it but still get some work done. I also found this rather difficult as when ever I'd take a photo I would always include a busy background, this resulted in me going back out to take more photos. 

This back of head portrait is rather good because the background is bland but at the same time the wall curves away from the middle causes an effect the draws your eyes to the model in the centre as the bricks seem to point into the middle.

This is again a good photo from the session, the background is plain and there is nothing to distract you from the main point of the photo except from the shadow produced by the model, if given the chance to retake this photo I would take it from a better angle but I could also just clone over the shadow. . 

To improve I'd like to take photos of more unique 'heads', as in I'd like to take photos of tattoos, piercings or mid shaved anything fun and different. 

Shape Work Diary

This session was about the formal elements shape, the idea of shape is to find something and photograph it without any consideration about what is in the middle. I found this difficult because I tried to find a combination of different shapes, but I found I kept finding the same ones. 

I feel as if this is a good representation of shape, the lamp shade is a circle and within that there is another, to the right of it there is a square and I really like the overall lighting of the photo, the only light is in the centre (although looking at it now I feel as if I could have centred it a bit more and it would have made better overall picture).

This is a good image but there is a lot of room for improvement for example the compassion is a tad off as the camera could have been directly over the light and a bit more centred but overall the image its self is very good and the contrast of the colours works very well. 

If I could do this again I would probably find a museum or something, I would try to find shapes in history and technology. 

Texture Work Diary

During this session we were given the formal element of texture, texture is how a surface feels. This is shown in photography using light, light lays across the surface and gives you a sensation of how the surface feels. I found this to be rather difficult because the sun wasn't out enough for us to be bale to take enough good photos.

This is one of my favourites from the session. I really like this photo as texture is clearly shown by the shadowing on the wall, all the tiny ridges and marks have a thin shadow in them and this allows us to see the effect of texture taking place, I do really like how this image starts off dark in the top left corner and becomes brighter as you go down the image, it helps identify the texture and bring the wall to life.

I like this image because there is a lot for texture to work with, the bumps on the manhole cover stand out the most but the specs of dirt and moss also add to the texture of the photo. From this photo I believe I can advance my ideas as I think the moss would have been a good object to focus on, or anything of similar texture. 

To improve I would like to photography something finer perhaps, such as same, wood or moss. I feel as if the images above are just example of the beginning of a topic that could be very cool, focuses on stranger textures would create a better photo. 

Photo Joiner Work Diary

During this session we went we took many photos, this enabled us to have enough photos to create a photo joiner, we photographed any angles of a person, buildings and an object. I found this easy as we didn't have to find anything too specific but it did take a long time.

The photo joiner above took me a very long time, this is my favourite out of the 3 that I made, it is the biggest and for me the most difficult. I prefer this one to the others as I had the most fun making it, although there are parts that I don't like such as the very boxed top left corner. I have recently updated this image and removed any parts that I didn't like by either redoing it or removing a few of the images involved. 

This is also one of my photo joiners, I chose this one as I really do like the way it came out, its almost at an angle, you can tell there is a corner there but at the same time it's kind of hidden. Although this image shows photo joiner very well I believe there are a few images that don't quite fit into the image especially in the middle, to improve on this image I'd want to take some more photos and fill in spaces that look a little too odd with images that'll fit into it a little better.

To improve I think I could have taken more photos to clear it up a but, perhaps a few more angles just to straighten the image out and create a much cooler look. 

Movement Work Diary

During this session the topic in question was movement, I found movement to be rather difficult because I couldn't catch a clear image, it was always distorted and blurry without the movement effect. I felt at times the photos just looked as if I couldn't  take a clear photo. 

This is an example of an image that I didn't particularly like but in a way still got the effect that movement gives. This isn't the best photo I've taken but I feel it is a good example of where I went wrong. Here you can simply see a blur, this isn't what I wanted from the session but I feel if I was able to improve I'd just pay more attention to what I was doing. 

This is one of the best photos of the session I believe it captures movement well, although this photo isn't great I still believe this I've able to capture the formal element well and give a decent example of what I would like to do with movement, either capture people or vehicles. 

If I could improve from this session I think I would have focused on travel, cars, buses anything like that. This is because I believe there would be colour and interesting things to look at. 

Reflection Work Diary

I found this session to be rather difficult as trying to find clear reflections is rather tough. Although I did find enough photos, I still felt a lot of the photos repeated themselves or could have been clearer. Overall I found the topic enjoyable and believe I could do it again.

This photo is one of the best from the session as it is unique to the others as it is a distorted reflection. I really like this photo because it feels kind of real, I haven't made time stop by removing anything from the distance, I believe this ruins the image and annoys me that I didn't check the background before taking the photo,  this could have been quite simply a girl looking into her mirror. 

This photo was a very good one from the session, the reflected background is of trees, I see this as kind of ironic as the built up shopping area reflects trees and peacefulness if you will, I just see it as a reflection of what it used to be.

If I could do this topic again I would find new and creative ways to find reflections in, sunglasses, bubbles and interesting ways with mirrors. 

 

Tone Work Diary

During this session  the chosen formal element was tone, in this again we went out and looked for anything that would suit tone. The cameras had already been set to black and white, we just needed to use our imagination and find anything we could. I believe this session went really well, I managed to take a lot of photos, I think this is because from the right angle anything can look good with the correct amount of tone. 

I like this photo because of how simple it is, this photo fits in really well with tone as it doesn't change how the image could be interoperated, this image is very open to interpretation because it doesn't show a lot just the single word. Although I like this image, the compassion is a little off the word is a little far up and doesn't look exactly straight. 

This was the best photo from the session, I believe it has a comical sense of drama, or at least thats how I saw it. This image is one that i like but I didn't consider how the floor would look, the line going across the image at the top could have been made more straight if I'd decided to move the cup over or just find a different angle. 

If I had the opportunity to do this again I think I would explore different types of tone rather than just black and white I'd find the different types of tone through colour.
