Discussion Post

Photographers look for specifics when taking photos, they look for uniqueness around an object or person. They keep their eye for for the formal elements, these elements are what separates a bad photo from a good photo. The formal elements consist of line, colour, pattern, depth, texture, reflection, form, tone, shape and movement, these are incredibly significant when it comes to taking the right photos.

Line

The significance of the formal elements lies in what they do for us, they are able to describe the stuff we find difficult to describe for. When we can't describe something with words we can use photos and with that we use the formal elements to make up those photos. Each formal element has different aspects for example with lines there are vertical lines, horizontal lines, curved and straight.

Colour

The formal elements individually give the viewer a different effect, each element describes something different. Photographers analyse and pick a specific element for a particular reason, it's not just random. If a photographer whats an eerie, dark atmosphere they cold choose form as their element. This is why each formal element is unique as they all create different emotions and effects to the viewer.
